Counselling for Children and Adolescents


I work with children and adolescents who are experiencing emotional or behaviour problems. Before I start working with a child, I meet with parents to get all the background information and discuss the difficulties parents and child are experiencing.

The second session I meet with the child and establish a relationship with them so they feel safe to be with me. I use play therapy with young children who cannot always express their thoughts and emotions verbally, but we are able to communicate through the world of play, and it enables me to understand where they are emotionally. I then teach them how to identify and express their feelings.

Depending on the age of the child, the parent is present within the room or I will call in the parent when I think it’s appropriate for the child. It’s important that we work together for the child. I adapt the work I do to suit the individual needs of each child. For parents I can offer different strategies to help them at home.


Parents want to do the best that they can for their children , but sometimes family life can be quite challenging. Acknowledging they have a problem with their child's behaviour is the first step for parents. Next is to find help and support to address the difficulties.


It takes commitment and hard work to effect change within the family, but the rewards are worth it. And most parents are finding it hard work anyway, not only with disruptive behaviour but with their concerns over it. Also parents often although still loving their child, often don't like them at this point. So by changing behaviours we can re-build the relationship and gain a more rewarding and harmonious family relationship.


As an experienced Counsellor and Teacher, I bring an understanding of child behaviour as well as empathy and sensitivity to both child and parent within the sessions. Empowering the parents to feel good about themselves and their abilities plus improving the relationship with their children is my intention as well as teaching them new skills. Complete confidentiality is assured as well as a non-judgemental attitude. I believe that every parent is always doing the best they can with the knowledge they have.


I work in private practice from home as well as in schools working with both parents and children.
