Services for Schools

As a former Teacher, I now work in primary schools as a School Counsellor providing support for families who are having problems as well as providing courses for parents and school staff. Because of my understanding of the way schools work and the need to be informed of a child’s progress , I can liaise effectively between parents and staff.

With the counselling sessions I use play therapy with the children and teach them how to express their feelings appropriately I support parents by helping them develop positive strategies to improve their child’s behaviour at home. I facilitate 6 week courses for parents on Understanding Child Behaviour and 4 week Play Sessions for parent and child.

Courses for Parents, Teachers and Learning Support Assistants

Attachment in the Classroom

A course over 2 sessions on child development and emotional trauma

A child’s ability to learn is affected by his or her experiences of early relationships or attachments. Many children who have had a difficult start in life find it difficult to learn at school and have behaviour issues and often this behaviour can be misinterpreted. As the cause of a child’s difficulties may not be understood, our responses do not address the root cause. We can meet their needs better if we have a greater understanding of :

How early influences in a child’s life are linked to learning

How these influences may impact upon vulnerable children

Why it’s difficult for children who have been traumatised
to manage school and for schools to manage them

How working with vulnerable children affects the teaching staff

How can we recognise and help those with secondary trauma

A useful course for Teachers and LSA’s

Counselling and Communication Skills Level 1

This 5 day course teaches basic counselling skills, demonstrating how to listen and respond to children appropriately and improve communication.
These skills are:

Open ended questions
Reflecting feelings and meanings
Paraphrasing
Focusing
Summarising
Silences

We look at how and when to use these skills, plus other techniques and strategies, which enable us to communicate more effectively. Through active listening and attending, others are given the opportunity to resolve their frustrations and feel good about themselves. We also develop greater understanding of ourselves and others.

Students will not be qualified counsellors by the end of the course but they will have gained an awareness of how the choice of skills they use will help to create better relationships. A Certificate of Attendance will be given on completion of the course.

Art Therapy for Children

A six week course covering different aspects of art therapy. Each week we focus at one of the following topics and discuss how we can use it when working with children, either individually or in groups.

  • Drawing
  • Sand
  • Painting
  • Puppets
  • Masks
  • Story telling

Art therapy can be used to develop communication skills and build self-esteem and confidence. It is also an effective way of exploring specific issues, problems or incidents as well as promoting co-operative behaviour.

It is an excellent way of working with children of varying ability as it allows each child to participate at their own level and to be valued for their own contribution.

    Peer Mediation Skills Training

A three day course which teaches how to deliver this training to children in schools.

Peer mediation is a process whereby pairs of pupils act as mediators to help their peers resolve conflict. Pupils are empowered with the skills of conflict resolution and precious teaching time is freed up from dealing which children's issues.

It encourages children to take responsibility for their behaviour
It teaches them how to manage conflict constructively
It provides children with valuable life skills
Behaviour improves throughout the school as children not only feel heard but learn that there is a way to resolve issues.

It needs to be administered by adults but once set up it should be pupil led on a day-to-day basis.

    Fee:£180
